Rough extract from a conversation between Julian Read and Walter Busuttil (immediately after Clumber Park National Sprint Championships 22 July 2000) WALTER: "What are your main aims with regards to Triathlon considering that there are quite a few people in our Club going mad for Ironmen?" JULIAN: "I have no interest in doing an Ironman as I know the amount time and effort required in training and preparation to successfully complete one. I have other more important things in life to get on with and feel no incentive to dedicate the time required." Where has the rest of your life gone? (- WEB Master) |

Extract from an email dated October 2000 from Mark Rees:
"I have, for my part, decided to take a back seat from competition in 2001. A combination of injury, poor performances and a 'temporary' loss of motivation has lead me to decide that a year off is for the best. I am saying this now so that its more difficult for me to 'go back on'. What I know is best for both my body and mind. Its something I have been considering for quite some time. I still intend to give direction to the club, support at races, and race once only at Guernsey 2001 (so long as the police members vote that I have earnt a year out and can still qualify?). Instead I intend to improve my cycling by time trialing and perhaps road racing so that I can hit the triathlon season in 2002 stronger, refreshed and without the repetitive running injuries im suffering with. I'm confident that Andy Budimir will prove testiment that 'time out' works so with difficulty I will test out the theory!" I would really be interested in your achievements in a year when you totally focused on Competition! (- WEB Master) |

LANZAROTE IRONMAN SUMMARY & REPORT

JOHN ROWLAND = 13:22:16 [353th; 102nd in Age Group 30-34]

WELL DONE TO THEM ALL!!
Problems for the 3rd NYP Tri team in 3 years to compete at the Lanzarote Ironman began 3 weeks before race day when biggest hope Julian Read,
sponsored by Pete Read Racing and in his second season racing for NYP Tri, came down with a suspected virus.
Only finally deciding to race 4 days before the start,
Julian in his first ever Ironman race put in a credible performance coming in 4th Britain and only 21 mins away from a Hawaii qualification slot in a time of 11 hrs 37 mins and 53 secs.
Problems for the team were compounded when Julian's luggage failed to arrive until the day before the race along with Mark Rees's kit.
Mark's bike wheels failed to materialise at all and his 3rd Canaries Ironman in 3 years looked in jeapordy until ex pro mountain biker Steve Naylor now working for Ciclomania in Arecife stepped in and,
with typical Yorkshire generosity, offered Mark his Gios road bike to race with.
Mark finished in 14 hrs 18 mins 12 secs, well down on his 12:38 from the previous year but his mission 'national league team points' was accomplished with John Rowland finishing in 13 hrs 22mins 16 secs.
It was just as well Mark had thrown in his hand with only 3 weeks to go,
as 4th team member Alan Marsh failed to finish despite valiant efforts in what was undoubtedly the toughest ever Lanzarote Ironman with strong winds and soaring temperatures which were even worse than the conditions of 1999.
The 2 police members and 2 non police members made it 2 scoring events for NYP Tri in just over a month and with 8 more target events including several more high tariff races the club is hoping to overhaul Derby's domination of the league in the last 4 years.
